The ninth edition of "Cancer numbers in Italy" was presented in Rome; the volume comes from the consolidated collaboration between the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) and the Italian Association of Cancer Registries (AIRTum), to which this year is added the AIOM Foundation, PASSI (Progress of the Health Authorities in Italy), PASSI d'Argento and Societa Italiana di Anatomia Patologica e Citologia Diagnostica (SIAPEC-IAP).

The standardized data, calculated therefore net of the aging of the population, relative to the time trends in the period 2003-2014, indicate that the cancer incidence is falling in both genders.

Breast cancer turns out to be the most frequent in the population, increasing especially in the Center-North for the extension of the screening programs and the target population (from 50-69 years to 45-74): this last however is not a negative phenomenon, because many tumors they are identified in the initial phase and with a high probability; healing  that, in the absence of screening, would have been discovered at an advanced stage.

The differences between regions also persist: the higher incidence is recorded in Friuli Venezia Giulia (716 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the lowest in Calabria (559 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
