Cancer care

In this section, cancer care in Piemonte is described through the use of the administrative healthcare data, available at Regional level. Such data source is characterized by some limitations on quality and completeness of clinical information. However, administrative healthcare data are highly standardized and offer the opportunity of a timeliness and efficient production of various indicators. Still, they allow for comparability of information over time and between facilities, at considerable low cost. The entire set of indicators (including migrations) is estimated from the data of one year of activity, usually not available until the second half of the following year. Several analyses and data quality controls are necessary to elaborate the final tables. Therefore, the publication is usually possible after around 12 months from the end of the reference year.

Currently, the system describes cancer care by means of the hospital discharge records and the dataset of outpatient services (radiotherapy and PET).

Cancer care is described as:

  • the assistance supplied in the Piemonte Region (including private providers paid by the Regional NHS), regardless of the residence of the patients, and
  • the care delivered to patients resident in Piemonte, including that one received in other Italian Regions.

Assistance supplied by Regional providers is described in terms of volume of admissions and outpatient services, including care for residents outside the Region (active migrations).

Assistance received from residents in Piemonte is described through standardized rates of resources utilization (number and days of hospitalization, number of services consumed), including care delivered in other Regions (passive migrations).

The query system allows you to choose freely between the available selection criteria, without a pre-established hierarchy.
